Listening, Understanding and Practicing Saying Words in English

These are the 3 pillars of learning a new language.  If you want to speak a foreign language, the three things you must do are:

  1. Listen – so that you learn the sounds of your new language and get comfortable with the rhythm and pitch of common sentences.
  2. Understand – for this, you have to learn some vocabulary.  If you don’t use the right methods to learn vocabulary, this can be a long and difficult process.
  3. Practice speaking the words – this is an extremely overlooked point in English language learning, but absolutely necessary if you want people to understand you.

So how do these three things work?

Let’s start with the first step,

Listening

Listening is perhaps the most important component of any English learning program.  If you don’t listen, you won’t know how to pronounce words and sentences.  And you won’t understand people when they talk to you.

You’ll also probably never get to the point where you can actually “think” in a foreign language.

But here’s the problem – many people (especially when they’re first starting out) have trouble listening to English for long periods of time.  They don’t understand everything they’re hearing, so they either get bored and stop listening or they give themselves a headache trying to understand everything.

Here’s my advice to you:

Listen as much as you can – especially if you’re first starting out.  This is the only way you’ll learn correct pronunciation in your new language.  I know it’s hard – so don’t try to understand everything at the beginning.  Just get used to hearing the words, rhythm and pitch of English – just like music.  Later, you’ll understand more and you’ll already have a good feel for the sounds of your new language.

Which brings us to step 2:

Understanding

Understanding a new language can actually be one of the most enjoyable part of the whole learning process.

When you start to understand – previously meaningless sounds and words become things and ideas.  Instead of just working in your English lesson book, you can watch films, read books, listen to music, have conversations with people in English.  It’s much more interesting!

But here’s the problem: understanding requires…MEMORIZING NEW WORDS!

Yes, I know – memorizing – but, it doesn’t have to be painful and boring if you use the right methods.

Here’s the key:

The same techniques don’t always work for everybody.  YOU have to find out which ones work for you, and use those to increase your vocabulary every day.

Most people learn better with pictures.  If you can make a visual image of something, it’s easier to remember.

If you add emotion or something unusual to what you’re learning, your memory of it will be stronger.

If you say something with a rhythm or rhyme, it’s easier to recall.

Try these methods and see which one works for you.  After you know some vocabulary, you stıll need to…

Practice Speaking Words in English!

This is a very simple exercise, but almost everyone who is trying to learn English doesn’t practice this enough.  It’s important because it will help you feel much more comfortable and confident when speaking English in real life.  People will actually compliment you on how well you speak!

All you have to do is read English sentences aloud.  Actually, that’s not all you have to do, but that’s how you start.  Here are some ways to make this more effective:

The best choice is to practice with a native speaker (preferably a good teacher) who has a good accent.  Speak the sentence as well as you can – and allow the teacher to correct you if necessary.

You can also have your teacher read short phrases (or groups of words) and then repeat them as precisely as you can.

You can even use this method if you don’t have a teacher – just play a recording, press pause, and repeat the sentence.  If you’re not sure about your pronunciation – record your voice and compare it with the original.

Pay close attention to pronunciation.  If you get it right in the beginning, you’ll always be understood.  If yo u make too many mistakes (or learn it wrong from a teacher with a bad accent), it will be very difficult to correct it later on.

The Golden Key To English Speaking

Each of these 3 pillars is effective for English learning – Listening, Understanding, Practicing Speaking Words – but the real key to better English speaking is to use ALL of them together.

If you listen a lot, and know a lot of words, but don’t practice saying the words – you’ll have bad pronunciation and won’t be able to speak.

If you practice listening and speaking a lot, but don’t study words – you’ll have a low vocabulary and won’t be able to express what you want to say.

If you only study words and practice saying them, you might be a little better, but you still won’t be used to the ‘sound of English’ and will have trouble ‘thinking’ in your new language.

Used all together, you can create a very powerful English learning program for yourself – one where you see results quickly and feel good about the progress you’re making.

Have you used these methods before?  Did you find them effective?
